Risks of Artificial Intelligence

For every benefit AI offers, there's a corresponding risk that needs to be taken seriously. Understanding these risks isn't about being afraid of AI, it is about knowing what to watch for so the technology can be used safely and responsibly.

Misuse

Advanced AI systems, if not properly safeguarded, could potentially help bad actors design dangerous weapons or carry out other harmful activities. This is one of the reasons AI companies now run extensive safety evaluations before releasing new models testing for exactly these kinds of failure modes ahead of time. Companies like Anthropic also work directly with governments, policymakers, and other AI labs to raise safety standards across the industry, since no single company can solve this problem alone.

Misinformation

AI-generated text, images, and video are becoming harder and harder to distinguish from content made by real people. That’s a serious problem for social media, where misinformation can spread quickly and convincingly. In response, companies are developing watermarking technology designed to flag AI-generated images and videos though this is very much a work in progress, and detection tools are far from perfect.

Bias

Traditional AI models are trained heavily on human feedback, which means human biases can get baked into the system. One approach to addressing this is “Constitutional AI,” a method Anthropic uses where models evaluate their own responses against a set of guiding ethical principles designed to encourage helpful, honest, and safe behavior rather than relying solely on human raters whose own biases might otherwise shape the model.
